Edinburgh Festival 2011 Information
Plan a trip to Scotland for the Edinburgh Festivals. Beginning in the Spring, and running right through December, there are activities that will entertain everyone. Scotlands capital hosts the event annually, and this is its 65th year.
There are 7 festivals that will run through the summer of 2011. The Edinburgh International Film Festival begins it all, and the Edinburgh Mela Festival will wrap the summer up. Generally you can buy tickets right up until the Festival time, but you may want to plan ahead for accommodations.
There is an Art Festival, Jazz and Blues Festival, and even an International Book Festival. There is a festival that will please everyone, no matter what your tastes are. The Festivals run right into the Autumn and Winter season, with a Scottish International Storytelling Festival, and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.
One of the top featured events are “The Revenge of Prince ZiDan.” Witness Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” like you have never seen it before. Fantastic costumes, acrobatics and music will make it a show to remember. A top rated show would be the “Semiramide Vlaamse Opera.” Set in a world of lust, violence, politics and murder, Babylon is ruled over by Queen Semiramide. This is an extremely energetic show, and well worth it. Portraying Shakespeare’s final and most poetic play, “The Tempest” mixes Shakespeare’s fiction with historical facts to create an amazing show.
The accommodations vary and will suit your likes no matter what you seek. Hostel haven is great for the backpacker and budget traveler who just wants a place to be comfortable while enjoying the festivals. Hotels, bed and breakfasts and even apartments are available for your stay and you are sure to find what suits you. A family might be better off renting an apartment for the weekend, rather than get a hotel room by the night. Also, you may be better off finding a place near public transportation. This can get rid of some of the hassle of traveling while you are visiting.
Children will be delighted with some of the shows available to them. In the fall, be sure to check out “Potato Needs A Bath.” It’s about a party everyone is going to be at, including onion and peach, however potato has decided not to take a bath. A delightfully humorous show for the smaller group. “Oops A Daisy” is another show children will love. Enter the crazy world of daisies, movement and music and enjoy the magic with your child.
Enjoying the Edinburgh Festivals don’t have to break the bank. There are 2 for 1 tickets, savings on certain days, and even free tickets can be sought out. There are special packages for groups and families as well.
On the other hand, if you want to splurge and indulge yourself, Edinburgh has four Michelin starred restaurants. Dine at The Plumed Horse or Restaurant Martin Wishart for a fantastic meal. And for cocktails, check out the Scotsman Hotel or Kay’s Bar.
You won’t be disappointed with a trip to the Edinburgh Festivals.
